Hornets Win 9 to 6 vs Franklin Pierce

The Enumclaw High School Hornets traveled to Franklin Pierce High School this past Saturday night to take on the Cardinals. Although it was a low scoring affair there was plenty of offense. Coach Patterson and I were pleased as our defense scored for the first time this year causing a safety. That is two games thus far this year where we have had a safety in the game, this week we were on the better end.

In efforts to get the kids excited for the big game we put together a highlight tape of big plays from the week before and big plays from last years battle with Franklin Pierce up at Pete’s Pool. Saturday’s game did not showcase a last second goaline stand like last year but did feature the Hornets putting together a time consuming drive to hold onto the win late in the 4th quarter.  The Hornets won 9 to 6.  Definitely in an interesting score for a High School game but a Win is a Win!

The Hornets are 2 and 0 and are heading into this week’s game against Sumner High School who are 0 and 2. This will be the Hornets first home game of the year up at Pets’s Pool. Playing on natural grass will be nice for the boys and having a home cheering section will add to the excitement. The Hornets only get 4 home games this year which includes Homecoming. Hopefully the Hornets can put themselves in a good position after this week.  If the Hornets win they will be 3 and 0 and roll into Tacoma to take on Lakes who are ranked #3 in the state.

GM 60 Day Gurantee

There is a huge change coming to General Motors Company,

Leading the change is new Chairman Edward Whitacre, Whitacre who joined GM during its bankruptcy process and remained fairly quiet until this month.   The former AT&T Chief does not have much experience in the business but is acting fast to clean up GM.  It was reported earlier this month that Whitacre is being “frighteningly direct” with the top-level executives and is asking to see improvement in sales, market share and profitability. He said that if those changes don’t happen soon, there will be significant consequences.

Whitacre is also leading GM’s new advertising campaign along with Bob Lutz called “May the Best Car Win.”

The campaign started with a website “thebestcarwins”  which was a survey to rank cars in 5 categories.   Fuel Efficiency, Safety, Quality, Performance, the Best.   It was surprising for me to see what everyone thought.  So far the survey had Honda picked as #1 in quality that was interesting as they have been not in the top tier of J.D. Powers Initial Quality ratings for quite some time.

In part with the new ad campaign of “May the Best Car Win” GM with a 60 second commercial Whitacre speaks about GM’s new incentive where buyers of a new Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet or GMC will be able to return their vehicle within 60 days if they are not happy with it.  So that means buy a new car and if you are not happy bring it back.

EHS vs Wilson

Saturday September 4, 2009 The Enumclaw High School Hornets traveled to the Stadium Bowl in Tacoma to play the Wilson High School Rams.  My wife Sophia and my mom were waiting during the game for Heath Ledger to come out on the stands and start singing “You’re to good to be be true, can’t take my eyes off of you…”  (Stadium High School is where they filmed the movie 10 Thing I Hate About You)

This was a rematch from last year as the Rams came up to Pete’s Pool and walked away with the win 14-13.  The Hornets came out ready to play with its opening drive taking almost the whole length of the 1st quarter.

The Wilson Rams were only allowed 3 plays on offense in the 1st quarter due to the Hornets offense.  The game definitely heated up as Wilson Rams forced a couple of fumbles and converted those turnovers into scores throughout the game.  The Hornets forced the Rams into 3 interceptions and 1 sack which set up the offense to convert.

Down late in the contest 16 to 14 the Hornets made a late drive to put themselves into FG position.  They kicked a game winning FG with a few seconds left on the clock and pulled ahead for the victory 17 to 16.   The Youtube video is Defensive Highlights from the game.   The Hornets are preparing this week to take on Franklin Pierce Saturday Night.

Tornado in Enumclaw… Seriously

This is the video I took from my parents house as the Tornado rolled through Enumclaw on Sunday September 6, 2009. It came from the Southwest. The Tornado touched down at GE&B Nursey on 400th street and came along up the hill to our house. It snapped 3 to 4 trees on our property, threw our lawn furniture around and even picked up a potted plant. We were all safe but as the wind came swooping through we all sort of stopped and looked at the window as trees where bending in half from the wind. Debris was all in the air. By the time we realized it could possibly be a Tornado it passed. I grabbed my camera and started shooting some video.  The video is the Tornado coming down the hill over  HWY 169 by the Black Diamond and Enumclaw bridge. It went towards the foothills of the cascades and slowly disappeared.  It took tons of trees out on Franklin Road in Enumclaw.

I have been through an earthquake and tornado. I guess that is enough for me, I do not want to mess with mother nature anymore.

1950 Chevrolet Club Coupe

437 original, actual miles

Purchased new by Mr. and Mrs. Jessie Trueblood of Modesto. Shortly after purchasing this car, Mr. Trueblood took a day off to go fishing. While waiting for the “big one” to bite he witnessed a woman fall out of her boat. Mr. Trueblood jumped in to help, but he had a fatal heart attack. Mrs. Trueblood returned the car home and placed it in the garage for the next 12 years. The odometer reading at that time (1962) was 413 miles.

Mrs. Trueblood lived next door to a used car lot owned by Mr. William E. Wilson (now 81 years old). Mr. Wilson spoke with her frequently and often told her he would like to buy the car for himself to keep. In 1962 the time had come. Mrs. Trueblood told Mr. Wilson she needed a car for her bookkeeper who didn’t really care for the ole’ Chevy and would prefer a Rambler. No problem. Mr. Wilson went down to the local Rambler dealer and bought a brand new one for $1,650.00 ($100.00 over cost) and made the swap.

He then took the car home and parked it with 433 actual miles. And there it sat for the next 45 years, occasionally being started and moved in and out of the garage. In 2007 Mr. Wilson decided to sell the car and started spreading the word aroundModesto that the ole’ Chevy with 433 miles on it was for sale. Many had heard about the car, but hardly anyone had ever laid eyes on it. In fact, according to Mr. Wilson he believes he only showed the car to about 5 people in 45 years. Word spread quickly about the car and soon a buyer arrived ready and willing to pay the $60,000 asking price. When Mr. Wilson told me the story of this car he complained heavily of the “capital gains” tax he was required to pay and wished he had never sold it. As of this writing, Mr. Wilson is still alive and well in Modesto and can verify the miles and originality of this car. Simply put, this is a true 100% factory original survivor (that includes the air in the tires). This ole’ Chevy now has 437 original miles and is most likely the world’s lowest mileage 1950 Chevy.

Cadillac Commercials

I love Cadillac Commercials.  I have always loved the Cadillac Marketing campaigns.  The newest addition is the “Re-Ignition” campaign marketing the re-designed SRX, CTS Sport Wagon and highly anticiapted CTS Coupe.  I love the CTS Sport Wagon.  I think performance wagons are great vehicles!  The American consumer is all about SUV’s but I wish the wagon would catch on with buyers.

Some other campaigns from Cadillac are the Led Zeppelin “Breakthrough” ads are great.  My alltime favorite Cadillac Commercial is with the Teddybear Stockholm song punk rocker!  Classic commercial.
