Enumclaw Football Car Wash 2012

Vodpod videos no longer available.

This will mark the 2nd year where I am not coaching High School Football.  It kills me as I love being out on the field with the players and coaches.  I want to stay involved and due to my work obligations it is to tough for me to make it out to practice every day.  I am not on the Enumclaw Football Foundation Board.  It has been a lot of fun being on the board for this 2012 season.  It is crazy to think it has been 10 years since I put on a Hornet Football uniform, feel pretty old here.

Football has really changed in Enumclaw since 10 years ago.  We have a booster club, summer football camp and 7 on 7’s.  The kids are asked to do a lot and one of the things the Foundation puts on is the annual car wash.  The players are giving cards to pre-sale.  For whatever the kid sells goes directly to his fund for camp.  If the player sells $300 worth of tickets that money goes directly to his summer football camp fund.

For the 2012 car wash we had perfect weather.  The cars kept on coming and coming.  We don’t keep a direct count of all the vehicles we wash because it is a lot but we probably wash about 400 cars in a day.  With our great location at Gamblin Motors Truck Center it is a great place to have a car wash.  We added  a twist to the car wash this year.  We wanted to get the cheerleaders involved.  After people got their car washed the cheerleaders asked them if they would be interested in test driving a vehicle.  Gamblin Motors worked with the cheerleaders for every test drive they got Gamblin Motors would donate to their booster club.

Enumclaw Ford Drive One For Your School

The Enumclaw High School Football Program and Choir joined forces this past Saturday for a fundraiser. In the morning was a pancake feed and in the afternoon was a test drive program sponsored by Ford. Of course when I showed up to help everyone wanted to know if I was going to test drive a Ford. Most people forget that I sell used Ford’s all the time so it was not the first time I have driven a Ford. I was not going to leave without help raise some money for the Football team and Choir. So I decided I wanted to drive the new Taurus.  It was a lot of fun to drive a new car and it was even better to have fun with all the Ford people.  What a great event and beautiful weather you couldn’t ask for much more.

Enumclaw Sweeps White River

It was the 61 meeting of the battle of the bridge at Pete’s Field this past weekend. I am going to take excerpts from the article written by Judge Rick Bathum in the Football Program about the history of the rivalry.

Before there were Hornet on both sides of the White River there was the Buckley Mountaineers and the Enumclaw Tigers. After World War I the two teams played there first game of football. Enumclaw prevailed (like many years to follow) with a 26-0 victory. From 1920 to 1948 the two teams played each other a total of 31 times.

In 1948, the Enumclaw School District and the White River School District merged. The merger only lasted 4 years. Gone where the Buckley Mountaineers and the Enumclaw Tigers. It was officially called the White River Hornets. After the 1953-1954 school year the merger dissolved. Buckley assumed the name White River Hornets. Enumclaw became the Enumclaw Hornets and after the split the two teams did not play against each other for 15 years.

The rivalry was renewed in 1966 for about 30 years until 1995 when the Enumclaw Hornets went to 4A and joined the SPSL league while White River stayed at 3A. In 2006 the rivalry came back together as both teams joined the newly formed SPSL 3A.

This year it was very exciting as both teams came into the game fighting for a playoff spot. You win you are in and if you lose you are out. The stakes where high this year. After rough weather the past few weeks and a lot of football played by the local pee wee football programs the field at Pete’s was not much of a field but a mud pit.

As my wife Sophia said the game was not that exciting, well if you are expecting a lot of long runs, big passes and a lot of touchdowns then this Battle of the Bridge was not the game for you. It was a defense of battle and a game of field position. The Enumclaw Defense came to play on Friday night as they forced multiple turnovers along with only giving up 70 yards of total offense for the White River Hornets. The best pass defense in the SPSL shut down the White River passing attack to only 24 yards. The defense only allowed 1 first down in the 2nd half.

With a dominate performance from the EHS defense it was not till late in the game when the Hornets got on the scoreboard with a FG. With a 3-0 lead and time winding down my little brother got to score a touchdown on senior night which was fun to see.

Not only was Varsity victorious for the Hornets over the White River Hornets but all Enumclaw teams won including the JV and Freshman team.  With a sweep I must say to my former college roomates from Buckley and White River Alums the years to come do not look that great for White River.

Football Played In The Mud

10-16-09 Andrew vs Bonney lake

Hornets improve to 6-1. Friday night did not start out the way Hornet fans anticipated.  The week preparing for Bonney Lake the weather did not always cooperate.  On Tuesday a huge rain storm came rolling into Enumclaw causing I guess you would describe as flash floods on the streets.

We were anticipating rain for Friday nights contest but were not expecting the inch of rain in 1 hour like we got.  The rain really started to fall about 20 minutes prior kick off and by the opening kick off it had turned Pete’s Field in a huge mud pit.

The Hornets kicked off and watched BL return the opening kick off for 6 points.  Everything that could go wrong in the first quarter it seemed to for the Hornets as they quickly fell behind 20 to 0.  The Hornets kept their composure and rallied back to score 33 unanswered.

The Hornet offense produced close to 500 total yards and the Hornet Defense really put the clamps down on the Panthers from Bonney Lake.  The Panther offense had roughly 75 passing yards and 85 rushing.  The Defense forced 3 turnovers.  My brother Andrew had a successful night as he rushed for over 165 yards on 26 carries.

The win set up an exciting match up this coming week as the Hornets take on Peninsula for a battle of 2nd place and home field advantage week 1 into the state playoffs.

Hornets 48 – Clover Park 20

The Hornets this past Friday night had their first real big win.   The Hornets the past season and half have not won a game over 10 points.  I guess the players just like to keep things close.  This however is not enjoyable for the coaches and parents as to many games have come down to the wire causing much anxiety.  I guess you can call this a break out game for this years group.  The Hornets are now 4-1 and 3-1 in the South Puget Sound League (SPSL 3A).

The Hornet Offense was unstoppable friday night at Harry Lang Stadium in Tacoma, Washington.  The Enumclaw Hornet offense put up 540+ yards of total offense.  It was a balanced attack via air and the ground for the EHS Hornets.  Riley Carel passed for 266 yards and completed 15 of 21 attempts with an average of over 17 yard per reception.  The most impressive  stat for Riley, he threw for a school record 5 touchdown passes.  The previous record was 4 held by either Coach Patterson or Coach Thomas.  Coleman Clyde the receiver for the Hornets set a school record in his own right by catching 4 TD passes and putting up 26 points.  Yes I know my math a touchdown is worth 6 points but Coleman did also catch a 2 point conversion.  I made sure Coleman knew that my record of 5 touchdowns and 30 points in a game was still unbroken.

The Hornet Defense caused 4 turnovers in the game and helped the Hornet offense with good field position throughout the game.

This next week the Enumclaw High School Hornets will be home against Auburn Mt View for homecoming.  It was Clover Park’s homecoming ton Friday and it was exciting and sad as the fans from Enumclaw out numbered the home team.  With the Hornets 4-1 and with 4 games remaining in the season 3 of which are home it should be a lot of fun to see Enumclaw fans pack Pete’s Field.

Influenza A – Swine Flu

So I turned 25 in September.  My birthday is September 23.  I was so excited because about a week before my birthday rolled around Sophia surprised me with the news that she got 2 tickets to see Wicked in Seattle for my birthday.  Of course this was too good to be true as I love the production Wicked.  I saw it in London a couple of summers ago with good friend Ryan Ward.  I think Sophia has listened to the soundtrack numerous times as it is always a favorite of mine to listen to at work and in the car.

Wicked Logo

The first problem we had with Wicked was the football conflict.  Wednesday night for football Varsity and JV practice under the lights up at Pete’s Pool at 7:00 PM.  This was not going to be any other Wednesday practice either, it was the Wednesday night practice before we took on #1 Lakes. The tickets were for Wednesday night, but I made the sacrifice and made the arrangements to miss practice to go on a date with my wife.

As Wednesday was approaching things did not get good in the Gamblin home.  I missed work on Tuesday because I was sick and I joined Sophia on the couch as we both where under the weather.  Sophia continued to bother me through out the day that our thermometer was broken and she wanted to know what her fever was up to.  Late Tuesday night I went to the store to get Sophia a thermometer.  Sophia had a temperature of over 103 degrees which freaked us both out.  So we went to the Emergency Room.  While we were in the hospital Sophia’s temperature dropped and they did some tests.  To the excitement of the nurses at the hospital that Sophia was the first case of Swine Flu the hospital had seen!  I have never been so proud, haha!  As the nurses were excited, Sophia was not to thrilled nor was I.

Swine Flu

OK, I think everyone in the world knows what swine flu is.  People have gone crazy about this flu, acting like it is the black plague.  While at the hospital they gave us a sheet on what Swine Flu is all about.  Swine Flu is really just Influenza A.  Influenza A is a contagious respiratory illness affecting pigs, but is now being spread from person to person. Symptoms are similar to regular human flu.  The flu spreads in respiratory droplets that are propelled through the air by coughing or sneezing.  A person may become infected by touching something with a virus on it and then touching their mouth or nose.

Here are some of the symptoms:

Fever, Headache, Tiredness, Cough, Sore Throat, Runny Nose, Body Aches.

I thought you would like the Wikipedia or complete copy of the form the hospital gave us.   The This flu was nasty and it kicked our butts here in the Gamblin house.  As my birthday rolled around Sophia and I were left paralyzed on the coach feeling miserable.  We were unable to go see Wicked that night, so we passed along the tickets to Sophia’s sister and boyfriend.  My birthday and the days after were spent with both of us with no energy and laying on the couch watching ESPN and HBO on demand.

We are finally back to health but man that flu really sucked!

Hornets Win 9 to 6 vs Franklin Pierce

Enumclaw Football

The Enumclaw High School Hornets traveled to Franklin Pierce High School this past Saturday night to take on the Cardinals. Although it was a low scoring affair there was plenty of offense. Coach Patterson and I were pleased as our defense scored for the first time this year causing a safety. That is two games thus far this year where we have had a safety in the game, this week we were on the better end.

In efforts to get the kids excited for the big game we put together a highlight tape of big plays from the week before and big plays from last years battle with Franklin Pierce up at Pete’s Pool. Saturday’s game did not showcase a last second goaline stand like last year but did feature the Hornets putting together a time consuming drive to hold onto the win late in the 4th quarter.  The Hornets won 9 to 6.  Definitely in an interesting score for a High School game but a Win is a Win!

The Hornets are 2 and 0 and are heading into this week’s game against Sumner High School who are 0 and 2. This will be the Hornets first home game of the year up at Pets’s Pool. Playing on natural grass will be nice for the boys and having a home cheering section will add to the excitement. The Hornets only get 4 home games this year which includes Homecoming. Hopefully the Hornets can put themselves in a good position after this week.  If the Hornets win they will be 3 and 0 and roll into Tacoma to take on Lakes who are ranked #3 in the state.
