Enumclaw Frozen Yogurt

Enumclaw Frozen Yogurt

FRIDAY NIGHT… The week is done.  Most young couples cannot wait to spend a fun exciting night out together.  What does a Friday night look like at the Gamblin household: Sophia and me on the couch watching TV and a conversation that starts at exactly 9:30 PM of who will get McFlurries from McDonald’s.  I am a huge ice cream fan.  I am not just any ice cream fan I am a Dairy Queen Blizzard fan.  It was like a loss to the family when Dairy Queen left Enumclaw in the 1990’s.  Every time I drive to work and past the Enumclaw Forest Service building were my beloved Dairy Queen used to sit I get a little weepy.  You better believe when I am in Bonney Lake or Auburn and fast food is suggested we are stopping at DQ.

So what was the best thing to replace my Blizzard fix? Thank you McDonald’s for introducing the McFlurry.  Now my relationship with McDonald’s when it comes to ice cream has been hit and miss.  I tried to order a LARGE Mcflurry and I was told that they only come in Small and Regular.    I asked can I get it in a large (yeah I am fat and love ice cream I don’t car.  That brings me to another point it is funny how people are sometimes ashamed to say they ate at McDonalds.  If you see someone you know there they automatically say I don’t want to eat here my kids forced me here while they pound a quarter pounder).  Anyways back to my LARGE McFlurry.  Thinking that the McFlurry was only offered in 2 sizes didn’t make sense. This is coming from the company that made Billions off the phrase SUPER SIZE me.  I was told again that they do not come in Large.  Of course I am thinking it is a 17 year old kid (like Eric Epperson was back in high school) is going to do me a favor and give me a large cup.  The response I received from my order taker shocked me… “We do not offer Large McFlurries because it is part of McDonald’s plan to fight obesity in America.” I wish I was joking.  Normally I am pretty quick to respond with something clever.  I was in shocked obviously this was not your typical 17 year old taking my order.  I of course was in shock while I took my McFurry.  Looking back on it I should have ordered just two regulars and stuck it to McDonald’s.  Or I could have just done an Andy Sandberg and threw it on the ground.

Anacortes Washington = God’s Country

Anacortes Washington Sunset

Sophia grew up in Anacortes, Washington. I always give her a hard time that Anacortes is not an island.  Anacortes is on Fidalgo Island and I guess by name it is an island, but if anyone has been to Anacortes you know it is not much of an island.  Last year we had Sophia’s grandma in the car and she couldn’t stop talking about how much she loves Anacortes.  She referenced Anacortes to God’s Country so many times it has stuck with us that whenever we go up to Anacortes we are going to God’s Country.  We had a quick 24 trip up to Anacortes to say hi to some family and within a blink of an eye we were back home.

Ward Visit… Before Babies

The Gamblins and Wards

It is always a good time when we get together with the Ward crew.  Ryan and Megan made the trip up to Washington right before the babies are born.  I guess you can say it was the last time we could hang out without changing diapers and putting little ones down for a nap.  It was a great trip and we got a few games of Settlers of Catan in.  I can only imagine what a game would be like in a year when we have crying babies.   Before Ryan and Megan left we had to get some pregnant shots in.

I am Back

Wow, it has been a long time since I have updated my blog. For those who follow me… cough, cough, OK I understand that when I write these I am not writing for any particular audience. If anything this Blog is for me to track events in my life and update some of the things I do at work. A lot has changed since I wrote last. Sophia and I have a dog and most importantly Sophia is pregnant with our first child. It is going to be a girl, so I better get used to a lot of pink, dresses and bows.

So I promise I will be updating this blog more now… (NO FINGERS CROSSED)

Where The Wild Things Are

Where the Wild Things Are Movie

While coaching football it is very difficult to find time to hang out with Sophia.  With both of us working and coaching at the same time every time I get home I am to exhausted to do anything besides sit on the coach and watch television.  Not the best way to start your first few months of being married.  I am hoping after football that we start doing fun married couple things… we will see.

So the other week I told Sophia we are going on a date.  We decided that we wanted to go see a movie.  When we both saw the preview for Where the Wild Things Are we were so excited as this was a favorite book of ours growing up.  I liked it even more because the theme song during the preview was from one of my favorite bands The Arcade Fire.

So here is my lame attempt of a review.  There are some movies that you go away saying to yourself  I want to see that again and yes I will pay $9 (plus another ticket then add the popcorn you are $25).  Then there are the movie experiences where you are indifferent you are trying to find a reason to love it and then at the same time you are trying to find a reason why you didn’t like it.  You know what type of movies these are when  someone asks you,  “so how was the movie?”  Your response consists of a shoulder shrug a sigh and something like it was alright.  You try to explain what you didn’t like first and then what you liked second.  The other type of movies are the rare cases of a movie where you walk out thinking to yourself how in the world did that film get financing to be even considered a movie.  The movies I can not stand are the ones where you walk out thinking to yourself that was an amazing movie with a great storyline, acting was wonderful but the ending or there was just one scene that ruined the whole movie.

As you can see I am avoiding the point of my official review of Where the Wild Things Are.  Should you go and see it in the theaters and pay the $25?  As Sophia would say, save the $25 and use that $25 to see Twilight a second or which will be in her case a third time.  I would not recommend going to see Where the Wild Things Are in the theaters it is worth using Netflix.  Here are the pros and cons of the movie.  The costumes I thought were great, I thought colors and scenery where great.  The music in my opinion carried the storyline through out the movie and made it fun to see giant furry costumes jumping on each other.

After the movie Sophia and I were discussing if the movie followed the book exactly as we had not read the book in forever.  So we called Sophia’s mom and had her read the book to us while we drove home.  After a few minutes of listening to the book I realize that it was a big stretch to make this into a full length film.  So here is my criticisms of the movie the plot was missing something.  I do not know what exactly what it was missing but it just missed that excitement or that attachment issue.  The costumes were great, the characters were fun but that was about it.  I just felt like it was a fun movie with big furry giant creatures and a little boy running around with not much depth.

As you can see this is one of those movies where I shrug my shoulders while trying to find a reason to love the movie and also trying to find a reason not to hate it.  I knew going into this that I would not be very concrete in my review.  I can only tell you this the movie is not worth going to see in the theaters save the money and take your wife, girlfriend or sister to Twilight.

Influenza A – Swine Flu

So I turned 25 in September.  My birthday is September 23.  I was so excited because about a week before my birthday rolled around Sophia surprised me with the news that she got 2 tickets to see Wicked in Seattle for my birthday.  Of course this was too good to be true as I love the production Wicked.  I saw it in London a couple of summers ago with good friend Ryan Ward.  I think Sophia has listened to the soundtrack numerous times as it is always a favorite of mine to listen to at work and in the car.

Wicked Logo

The first problem we had with Wicked was the football conflict.  Wednesday night for football Varsity and JV practice under the lights up at Pete’s Pool at 7:00 PM.  This was not going to be any other Wednesday practice either, it was the Wednesday night practice before we took on #1 Lakes. The tickets were for Wednesday night, but I made the sacrifice and made the arrangements to miss practice to go on a date with my wife.

As Wednesday was approaching things did not get good in the Gamblin home.  I missed work on Tuesday because I was sick and I joined Sophia on the couch as we both where under the weather.  Sophia continued to bother me through out the day that our thermometer was broken and she wanted to know what her fever was up to.  Late Tuesday night I went to the store to get Sophia a thermometer.  Sophia had a temperature of over 103 degrees which freaked us both out.  So we went to the Emergency Room.  While we were in the hospital Sophia’s temperature dropped and they did some tests.  To the excitement of the nurses at the hospital that Sophia was the first case of Swine Flu the hospital had seen!  I have never been so proud, haha!  As the nurses were excited, Sophia was not to thrilled nor was I.

Swine Flu

OK, I think everyone in the world knows what swine flu is.  People have gone crazy about this flu, acting like it is the black plague.  While at the hospital they gave us a sheet on what Swine Flu is all about.  Swine Flu is really just Influenza A.  Influenza A is a contagious respiratory illness affecting pigs, but is now being spread from person to person. Symptoms are similar to regular human flu.  The flu spreads in respiratory droplets that are propelled through the air by coughing or sneezing.  A person may become infected by touching something with a virus on it and then touching their mouth or nose.

Here are some of the symptoms:

Fever, Headache, Tiredness, Cough, Sore Throat, Runny Nose, Body Aches.

I thought you would like the Wikipedia or complete copy of the form the hospital gave us.   The This flu was nasty and it kicked our butts here in the Gamblin house.  As my birthday rolled around Sophia and I were left paralyzed on the coach feeling miserable.  We were unable to go see Wicked that night, so we passed along the tickets to Sophia’s sister and boyfriend.  My birthday and the days after were spent with both of us with no energy and laying on the couch watching ESPN and HBO on demand.

We are finally back to health but man that flu really sucked!
